James R. Miller

Chair, Trial Section

Growing up on a ranch in Wyoming, Jim Miller learned early in life the value of hard work, determination, and integrity. These are traits he has carried with him in his career as a successful trial attorney. As chair of the firm’s Trial Section, Jim has a distinguished 36-year practice that emphasizes corporate defense, employment, intellectual property, and securities litigation.

Aggressive and well prepared, Jim has extensive experience as lead counsel in both trial and appellate litigation in state and federal courts. He is considered an expert in the trial of complex cases to juries. He has extensive litigation, arbitration, and mediation experience in securities customer, industry, and employment disputes. Mr. Miller represents broker-dealers and registered investment advisors in regulatory and administrative proceedings before the Securities and Exchange Commission, Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, New York Stock Exchange, and state regulatory agencies.

Jim was lead counsel for the defense team in Davis v. Consolidated Oil & Gas, involving the successful defense of three publicly traded oil and gas corporations in Wyoming’s longest civil jury trial. In addition, Jim has successfully represented companies and other entities in grand jury investigations, shareholder derivative actions, product defamation proceedings, and emergency relief hearings.

Prior to allying his talents with Moye White, Jim was a founder of Miller Wood LLC, a preeminent boutique litigation and employment law firm.

Jim is a frequent lecturer regarding trial practice. In his free time, Jim is an avid flyfisher who spends summers traveling with his wife to rivers and streams around the country. His favorite author is Ernest Hemingway.
